Nasolabial folds are the indentation lines on either side of the mouth that extend from the edge of the nose to the mouth’s outer corners. They become more prominent when people smile and for this reason as also referred to as smile lines.
Nasolabial folds become more noticeable due to a variety of factors, including:
- Sun exposure, which damages the skin, causing wrinkles and changes in texture
- Loss of collagen with age, making the skin look weak and thin
- Loss of fat, which can make the cheeks and nearby regions appear saggy
- Smoking
- Enviromental pollution.
This procedure involves injecting dermal fillers into the area with the use of a cannula. By using a cannula instead of a needle we are able to safety inject filler in this area and minimise any trauma and bruising. Dermal fillers are made up of hyaluronic acid, a hydrophillic molecule that attracts and holds water in the area in which we have injected. This helps to increase volume, plumping and firming the skin and reducing lines and wrinkles.
Botolinum Toxin injections are another treatment that can be used to relax the muscle in this area and can be used as an alternative or an add treatment to increase results. In older client with deeper lines this may be advised to you by your practitioner for best results.
